The future EU-UK scientific collaboration

The future EU-UK scientific collaboration

By Ingemar Pongratz

There are still many issues that remain to find a solution between the EU and the UK following the decision of the UK to leave the EU in 2016. During the Brexit vote the news have focused on big issues such as the future trade relationship between the EU and the UK, the border between the Northern Ireland and the Ireland, free movement between the UK and EU citizens, etc. However,  The future EU-UK scientific collaboration is also an important area that needs to be resolved.

Shortly after the results of the UK vote to leave the EU, the UK and the EU announced that during the BREXIT negotiations UK institutions should be treated as EU members and in addition the UK made clear that UK participation in Horizon 2020 projects would be secured even after the UK would leave the EU after the end of the negotiations.

Recently, the UK Prime Minister Theresa May declared in a speech that the UK would join the future EU Framework Programme FP9 as an associated country.

This is very likely very good news for UK and EU researchers as the strong collaboration and participation of the UK in the Horizon 2020 provides a substantial contribution.

The strong UK research track record will certainly benefit European research excellence and EU research would no doubt loose a lot of impact if the UK would not participate in Horizon 2020 projects and future Framework programmes.

It is of course important that the UK and EU finally agree on the financial terms. As an associated country the UK would be expected to contribute financially towards the future FP9 programme. The final outcome is thus not finalized yet. The future EU-UK scientific collaboration is still been discussed
