New Scientific Advisors Appointed
By Ingemar Pongratz
The European Commission has announced the names of the selected members of the Advisory function that has been vacant following intense controversy. The previous advisor to the European Commission expressed views that attracted criticism from certain groups that allegedly responded with demands to remove the Scientific Advisor form the position. This move attracted massive critique from the Academic Community that pointed out that the function of the Scientific Advisor is to in fact provide science-based advice.
The European Commission decided to reinstate the Scientific Advisory function and established a nomination committee which now has identify suitable candidates. Indeed the list is impressive and includes well known scientific names and includes scientists active in the field of Molecular Biology, Climate Change, Mathematics, Physics, Material Sciences, Social Sciences and Food Science.
Interestingly, in a recent interview published in the scientific journal “Science“, Research Commissioner Moedas states among other things, that he is looking forward to a vocal scientific community, which participates in the public debate and influences the policy decision. However, it is worth noting the fate previous scientific advisor after providing scientific advice. It seems clear that policy makers need to reconsider how the legislators or stakeholders react to scientific advice as well.
